HIV Testing

Testing procedures require the nurse who gives the test to provide persons being tested for HIV/AIDS counseling before the test is given and when you return for the test results. If you have questions regarding HIV/AIDS, the test, or your results, ask the nurse or call.

Testing is accomplished by drawing a small tube of blood which is forwarded to a lab for evaluation. Typically test results are available in 10-14 days depending on the workload at the lab that analyzes your specimen.

Before getting tested for HIV, consider that testing can be done two ways. You should decide which method is better for you.

By Number: By law, you may choose to get an HIV test anonymously. The Nurse will assign you a number instead of using your name. This is sometimes referred to as Anonymous Testing since your name is not provided at the time the test is given. You must have the number with you when you return to get your test results.

If you test By Number and the result is positive, the Nurse will encourage you to be retested By Name. You can only receive services based on your HIV+ status if you have been tested By Name.

 By Name: By law, you may also choose to get an HIV test by providing your name. This is sometimes referred to as Confidential Testing since only you and those involved in the testing process are entitled to know the results of your test. You must have identification with you when you return to get your test results.

HIV testing is FREE at the locations shown below. Most locations require you call ahead for an appointment. You do NOT need to call the testing center that is closest to you.
